Understanding NDIS Positive Behaviour Support: A Person-Centred Approach

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a key evidence-based service funded under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It is designed to support NDIS participants who experience behaviours of concern that may impact their safety, wellbeing, relationships, or participation in everyday life.

Under the NDIS, Positive Behaviour Support focuses on understanding the function of behaviour, rather than attempting to control or eliminate it. Behaviours of concern are often a form of communication and may arise due to unmet needs, emotional distress, environmental factors, trauma, or difficulties with communication. PBS aims to understand why a behaviour occurs and how support can be adjusted to reduce distress and improve quality of life.

At Meraki Social Services, Positive Behaviour Support is delivered by qualified Behaviour Support Practitioners in line with NDIS Practice Standards. The process typically begins with a comprehensive functional behaviour assessment. This assessment explores triggers, contributing factors, and the purpose of behaviours within the individual’s daily environment.

Using this information, a personalised Behaviour Support Plan is developed. These plans are practical, individualised, and focused on improving wellbeing, increasing skills, and supporting positive engagement. Where restrictive practices are involved, plans are developed in accordance with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements, with a strong emphasis on reduction and elimination wherever possible.

Positive Behaviour Support under the NDIS is not about changing who a person is. It is about creating supportive environments, improving communication, and ensuring individuals feel safe, respected, and understood.
